Glen Howard

Managing Director, Legal Affairs & General Counsel

Glen S. Howard is the general counsel at The Pew Charitable Trusts.

Mr. Howard has broad experience in the legal and philanthropic communities, including 10 years at the Fannie Mae Foundation, where he was a senior vice president, general counsel, chief operating officer and secretary of the board of directors. Mr. Howard also helped lead the foundation’s grant-making and program efforts in Washington, D.C. In 2006 he began work as an independent advisor to foundations, corporations, nonprofits and individuals on their strategic philanthropic investments and operations.

He earned a bachelor’s degree cum laude from Harvard University and a law degree from the University of Chicago, where he was an editor of the law review. After serving as a clerk to Chief U.S. District Judge Newell Edenfield in Atlanta, he joined Sutherland, Asbill & Brennan where he worked for 20 years, becoming a partner and specializing in energy and antitrust law. Mr. Howard is a member of the Bar of the District of Columbia and is admitted to practice before several federal district and appellate courts and the Supreme Court of the United States.

Mr. Howard serves on the board of directors and executive committees of various nonprofit organizations, including Americans for the Arts, the Helen Hayes Awards and Goodwill of Greater Washington. A veteran concert performer and recording artist, he is a longtime member of the 175-voice Choral Arts Society of Washington, the Men and Women of the Gospel and other vocal groups. He has performed in nearly 400 concerts at the Kennedy Center.
