The Pew Charitable Trusts Announces $9 Million In Support Of Philadelphia Area Children, Youth And Families

The Pew Charitable Trusts announced today that it will provide $9 million over the next three years to 48 Philadelphia area nonprofit organizations serving disadvantaged children, youth and families.  Chosen through a competitive application process, these agencies have a deep understanding of the needs of children and families, draw upon well-researched approaches and have strong track records for demonstrating results.

Klasen, deputy director, Local Programs, Health and Human Services at The Pew Charitable Trusts.  "We share with them a deep commitment to improving the lives and futures of our youth and their families."

These grants will support programs through March 2010 and reflect four priorities of the Pew Fund for Health and Human Services in Philadelphia.  The Trusts' support is intended to:

• help improve the quality of local child care and early education programs;
• offer prevention and early intervention services for children displaying early signs of social and emotional problems;
• help parents and caregivers of children with mental health problems to find appropriate services for their child; and
• increase opportunities for disadvantaged youth to achieve academically and make useful contributions to their communities. 

The Pew Fund provides funding for three primary groups of at-risk populations: vulnerable adults who live on society's margins; the isolated and frail elderly; and disadvantaged children, youth and their families. Last March, the Pew Fund made awards totaling $4.2 million in support of services to the elderly. Next March, it will announce grants for programs for vulnerable adults. Since the Pew Fund's inception in 1991, it has awarded approximately $155 million to support health and human service organizations in the region.
